Hairstylist starter supplies: build a kit around your service menu

Start with the hair services you are trained and equipped to offer. Build the kit for those appointments, then add specialist tools when client work justifies them. A large starter bundle is poor value if half of it does not match your menu.

Define the first three services

Write down the service, the result you promise and the tools you have already learned to use. Keep cutting, styling and chemical services separate in your plan. A tool list is not proof that you are ready to perform a service.

Separate tools from repeat purchases

Plan sections for cutting/styling tools, protective items, towels and capes, product storage, and routine consumables. Ask your training provider for its required kit before duplicating purchases. Follow professional training, product instructions and local hygiene requirements for the actual procedures.

Buy for the whole appointment

Consider the work area, lighting, reliable tool storage and enough clean items for the appointment sequence. Track replenishment per service. Record the item, pack size, usable appointments per pack and reorder point in your own worksheet.

Compare the supplier, not just the price

Check professional-account eligibility, authorized brands, return exclusions, warranty handling and the nearest pickup branch. For products used together, get compatibility instructions from the manufacturer or your educator. Do not substitute an online popularity ranking for training.

Build a shortlist you can check locally

For Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary and the Vancouver metro, start with Modern Beauty’s official branch finder and check its professional-account requirements. For Montréal, compare the Mat&Max branch directory. These are places to check availability—not a claim that each branch stocks a complete hair, nail or makeup kit. Contact the branch with the exact product system and list from your course before travelling.

Places and resources to compare

Use these official directories and learning resources to build your shortlist. Check the exact branch, stock, account eligibility and current terms before travelling or ordering.

Questions & answers

Do I need to buy everything before taking a client?

Buy or arrange the equipment needed for the specific service you can competently deliver. Test the complete workflow first, and add optional tools when a real need justifies them.
