A makeup artist’s starter-kit planning checklist

Plan a working kit around the clients and looks you intend to serve. Budget for shade coverage, tools, hygiene supplies, transport and replenishment before adding products simply because they are trending.

Choose the first type of client work

Bridal, event, editorial and special-effects work have different preparation needs. Write a sample appointment brief before shopping: who the client is, where you work, what look is needed and how much time is available. Let that brief expose gaps in your kit.

Audit coverage with your educator

Review products across the skin tones, ages and finish preferences your service is intended to support. Ask a qualified educator to review gaps and handling requirements. A broad shade plan is more useful than repeatedly buying similar shades.

Budget beyond the product bag

Include lighting, a usable work surface, transport, tool organization and the hygienic supplies required by your training. Keep clean items organized separately as instructed. Follow current manufacturer instructions rather than improvising decanting or sanitation procedures from social posts.

Replenish from actual appointment use

Keep an item-level list of what you own, what is running low and what has reached its advised replacement point. Check professional-account rules and opened-product returns before purchasing. Add speciality items when a booked service and your training justify them.

Build a shortlist you can check locally

For Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary and the Vancouver metro, start with Modern Beauty’s official branch finder and check its professional-account requirements. For Montréal, compare the Mat&Max branch directory. These are places to check availability—not a claim that each branch stocks a complete hair, nail or makeup kit. Contact the branch with the exact product system and list from your course before travelling.

Places and resources to compare

Use these official directories and learning resources to build your shortlist. Check the exact branch, stock, account eligibility and current terms before travelling or ordering.

Questions & answers

Do I need to buy everything before taking a client?

Buy or arrange the equipment needed for the specific service you can competently deliver. Test the complete workflow first, and add optional tools when a real need justifies them.

Does EZ Customers track my supply inventory?

This worksheet is for your own supply planning. Use EZ Customers to organize the services, bookings and client information that the kit supports; this guide does not claim an inventory-management feature.
