Portrait photography equipment: a first-client kit plan

Choose equipment around the shoot you have agreed to deliver. Start with a camera and lens you can use reliably, a lighting plan, power and storage backups, then test the complete capture-to-delivery workflow before the appointment.

Let the assignment choose the kit

A single-person indoor portrait and a large outdoor group have different space, lens and lighting needs. Write down the location, people, intended image use and available setup time. Test that exact scenario with the equipment you have.

Plan reliability before upgrades

Pack charged batteries, suitable cards, cleaning essentials and a backup plan for failure. Decide how you will copy and check files after the shoot. An expensive new lens is less useful than a reliable way to finish the agreed job.

Rent to answer a specific question

If you need unfamiliar lighting or a specialist lens, compare rental availability and terms at the actual branch. Leave time to learn the equipment before the client arrives. Ask what is included, what identification or deposit is required and how late returns are handled.

Include the delivery stage

Budget for editing software, file storage and the time to prepare final exports. Confirm whether the client needs web-sized files, print-ready files or both. Tell them what is included and when to download the delivered work.

Build a shortlist you can check locally

For Toronto and Ottawa, Vistek’s official contact directory links the local branches. In Montréal, start with Gosselin’s Montréal store page. Beau Photo lists its Vancouver location at 110–1401 West 8th Avenue. In Calgary, compare The Camera Store and Vistek. Ask the actual branch about the item, rental dates, included accessories and return terms; a chain-wide catalogue does not establish local availability.

Places and resources to compare

Use these official directories and learning resources to build your shortlist. Check the exact branch, stock, account eligibility and current terms before travelling or ordering.

Questions & answers

Do I need to buy everything before taking a client?

Buy or arrange the equipment needed for the specific service you can competently deliver. Test the complete workflow first, and add optional tools when a real need justifies them.
